Alabama Family Trust announces leadership changes

Alabama Family Trust announced leadership changes, including naming Lesley Byars its Executive Director. 

Alabama Family Trust is a nonprofit organization created by the Alabama Legislature to manage Special or Supplemental Needs Trusts of all sizes. Based in Birmingham, AFT helps families hold funds in trust so they can provide for their senior or disabled family member in a manner that helps them qualify to receive Social Security Income and Medicaid benefits. 

Lesley Byars

Byars, a Certified Public Accountant, was formerly the organization’s Chief Financial Officer. She has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from The University of Alabama. She began her career as an auditor working for PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York City. After returning to Alabama, she managed the trust tax departments for the Birmingham offices of two Fortune 500-sized banks.

Byars has worked as a consultant to public accounting firms located in several states on issues related to taxation and administration of trusts, estates and nonprofit organizations. She is a member of the Alabama Society of CPAs.

Evan Lichter

Evan Lichter has been named the organization’s Senior Trust Officer and Office Manager. Lichter will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial, accounting and administrative functions of the company. He had served as AFT’s Trust Operations Manager since 2017. 

Prior to joining AFT, he worked for Regions Bank for a decade in trust accounting and debit card operations. 

A Mountain Brook native, Lichter earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in management from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business and completed postgraduate coursework in accounting at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Collat School of Business.
