Wallace Davis turned to AFT to give his parents a quality retirement

When families face the reality of long-term care for a loved one, the emotional weight is often matched by financial fear. For many, the cost of care can feel overwhelming—especially when there are limited by funds and have no clear path forward. This is exactly where Alabama Family Trust (AFT) becomes life-changing.

A Family Facing the Unexpected

In 2012, Wallace Davis found himself navigating one of the most difficult seasons of his life. Both of his parents were diagnosed with dementia. They had spent their careers as school teachers — hard-working, dedicated, and careful with their finances. Like many educators, they had saved what they could, but their retirement resources were modest.

“They’d been hard-working school teachers, saved up what they could,” Wallace shares. “But they faced unbelievable costs to take care of them.”

Caring for his parents at home was not an option. Their medical needs required professional, around-the-clock support, and the only realistic solution was a nursing home. The cost, however, was staggering.

Finding Help Through Alabama Family Trust

That’s when Wallace and his family were introduced to Alabama Family Trust.

“We met the people at Alabama Family Trust, and we set up a trust for them that helped to manage their assets,” Wallace explains.

By establishing a trust with AFT, Wallace’s parents were able to protect the limited assets they had worked their entire lives to save while also qualifying for Medicaid. Once the trust was in place, Medicaid covered the cost of their nursing home care.

“And we got my parents on Medicaid, and Medicaid paid for their cost,” Wallace says.

More Than Financial Relief—Peace of Mind

For Wallace, the impact of working with Alabama Family Trust went far beyond dollars and paperwork.

“It made it so much better for me because I was able not to have to worry about how to pay for everything,” he shares.

Instead of constantly fearing how he would cover his parents’ care, Wallace could focus on being a son—spending time with his parents and supporting them emotionally during a challenging chapter of life.

Just as important was the personal support he received from the AFT team.

“We also found that the people at Alabama Family Trust were so helpful in every way possible,” Wallace says. “I never had a time when they were not helpful.”

Why a Trust with Alabama Family Trust Is So Important

Wallace’s story is not unique. Many families assume they must spend everything they have before help is available. Alabama Family Trust exists to change that reality.

By setting up a trust with AFT:

  • Families can protect assets they’ve worked a lifetime to build
  • Loved ones can qualify for Medicaid and other benefits
  • Funds can still be used to enhance comfort, dignity, and quality of life
  • Families gain guidance, compassion, and peace of mind during stressful times

A Trusted Partner When It Matters Most

Alabama Family Trust is more than a financial solution—it is a partner for families when they need it most. For Wallace Davis and his parents, it meant stability, dignity, and relief during an otherwise overwhelming time.

For countless other families across Alabama, it continues to mean the same thing: hope, help, and a path forward.
